After that gig at Dante's, we soon learned that another band in town also had the name "Lift", and had been using that name before us. So, we had to change our name.
So, where did the name "Rule of 7" even come from? I wish I had a nickel for every time we got asked that question. The way I understand it is this. When Mike and I were teaching guitar lessons at the music store, he happened to walk through the guitar department of the store and saw a bunch of posters of rock stars tacked all over the walls. One of the posters had a group of well-known rock guitarists, all holding seven-string guitars. At the top of the poster read "Rule of 7". Mike jotted it down on a piece of paper, and the next thing we knew, that was our new band name. That's all it means, nothing else. Nothing cryptic or weird. It just sounded good.
