The term "Yacht Rock" re-emerged around 2005. Iād like to think that I have my musical ear to the ground most of the time, but I only learned about this newly labeled genre of old music, fairly recently. My first reaction was, "What the hell is Yacht Rock, and who came up with such a stupid name as a genre of music?" Then I learned what type of music "Yacht Rock" was considered as part of this new category. It was the music I grew up with in the 1970's and early 80's.
I protest! Leave my music alone! It doesn't need to be renamed something else, four decades after it was recorded. It used to be referred to as "Soft rock" or "Contemporary music", back in the day. Thousands of radio stations survived for a very long time, under these identities in their formats. Suddenly, 40 plus years later, one guy has a hit song called "Sailing", and it somehow gets labeled as a pretensions, condescending anthem for rich people who own expensive boats?
