Advanced Beginner Lesson
“Tin man” is one of earliest acoustic songs I learned when I first started playing the guitar in the mid 1970’s. This song is slightly advanced for some beginner guitar players, but with practice, I think that everyone can learn it. There are five chords in the entire song.
(Find the list of chords for this song below)
Intro
One of the most recogizable first chords of many 70’s songs, the first measure starts off with a “C/D” chord. The second chord is an uncommonly voiced “D7” chord, with no third in the chord structure. These two chords begin the intro.
4/4 || C/D | D7 |
Verses
Next is the verse. The first measure is GM7. The second measure is a CM7 (without a bass root note). This progression repeats until the bridge.
The strumming pattern is a significant part of why this song was such a huge hit. It is a little bit difficult to play, but in the video, I explain how you can practice this pattern or substitute it with something a little easier to play.
4/4 || GM7 | CM7 | GM7 | CM7 | GM7 | CM7 | GM7 | CM7 ||
Bridge
The shape used for the GM7 gets moved from the first finger on the 2nd fret of stri9ng 1, to the 7th fret. This chord now becomes “CM7”.
4/4 | CM7 | GM7 | CM7 | GM7 | CM7 | GM7 | CM7 | GM7 | C/D | D7 ||
(Then you go back to the verse.)
These are the three patterns in the entire song.
With some honest, steady practice, this song can be learned in a few days.
The following is a list of the chords I play in the video, in linear order format (strings 6 5 4 3 2 1 - these numbers represent the frets where you will place your finger and in the order from string 6 to string 1. "x" means you do not play that string. "0" means that it is an open string note).
List of chords as they appear in the song:
C/D - x x 0 5 5 3
D7 - x x 0 5 3 5
GM7 - x x 5 4 3 2
CM7 - x x 5 4 5 3
CM7 - x 0 10 9 8 7
