I have an idea to get more paying subscribers this year. I call this Substack “SoundHole” because I talk about music and I want to eventually incorporate guitar lesson videos that will actually help my subscribers become better guitarists. Makes sense, doesn’t it?
Here is my plan...
I have a very nice Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. It has amazing camera/video capabilities. I also have a tripod with a brand new "Ulanzi ST-06" cell phone holder that is mountable on the tripod.
I have recording software for both audio (Cakewalk Sonar Producers Edition Master Suite) and video.(Sony Vegas Pro 11 and 14).
I made about a dozen guitar lessons videos for YouTube several years ago, but was unable to continue making them because my Windows XP desktop computer crashed in December 2013, and I was forced to get an HP laptop. Unfortunately, that laptop did not have the processing power to run all of the recording software. That laptop contracted a virus and no longer runs properly. I was once again forced to buy something cheap to keep me online for my business. I bought a small HP notebook just so I could remain online to do basic things.
My hope is to get a brand new desktop computer so I can once again, make guitar lessons videos and edit them professionally using my software. I don't plan to do anything real fancy because, quite frankly, where I live sucks. It's noisy and I don’t have much room to set up anything professional.
None of that should matter anyway. The S22 Ultra has a very good camera for doing videos and I know how to do professional editing using the software.
Once I get all of this set up, I plan to do brand new videos as real guitar lessons that you will be able to pay for through a monthly or yearly subscription.
Some videos will be free, but will have limited duration, sort of like a trailer. I would like to do at least two or three videos per week. That's eight to twelve new videos each month. Most of these videos will be marketed towards beginners and intermediate guitar players. They will vary in length for a few minutes to full lessons.
So, what do I do? Do I take out a credit card and spend the money to buy a brand new, more reliable computer? I really don't have the funds to buy one now, but I think that if I invest in a new desktop, I will be able to make videos right away and hopefully get some paying subscribers here on SoundHole.
Would you pay $5/month or $50/year to learn how to play the guitar from a professional, experienced instructor like me?
I would love your feedback on this.
Thanks, Dave
