I started taking guitar lessons in 1976. I was 13 years old. All I knew about tuning my guitar were the names of the strings and when they were tuned to concert pitch. Back then, the only "tuners" available in music stores were pitch pipes and tuning forks. The piano we had in the basement was horribly out of tune, so I couldn't use it. I learned that there was another way to tune my guitar without using any of those things.
