Like becoming a cook or a carpenter, becoming a good instrumentalist can take many years of practice.
Think of something you're very good or accomplished at doing. Are you a good cook? Do you like to invite guests over to your house while you cook them a huge meal? Perhaps they rave about how good your delicious meal was and that in itself is your reward. You didn't learn how to cook that meal in one or two cooking classes. Chances are, you have been interested in cooking specialty meals for family and friends for many years. You've invested in cookware, measuring items, and endless knives and utensils. In time, you've probably invested several hundred dollars or more to become a better cook. What started out as a hobby, became something much more than just a casual interest.
Perhaps you like to work with your hands. You took a wood shop class in high school, and you enjoyed it so much that you built the table or stand that is still being used in your parents house.
