This article will hopefully shed some light on the scales you should know on your guitar in order to play just about any kind of melody or improvisation, without getting too deep into the weird, technical stuff. I have taught the following scales to many of my students for the past 25+ years; and they seem to work well enough to give the average practicing guitarist plenty of room and confidence for improvising solo's on the fly.
