Can you believe it's been 40 years? How old were you in 1983? What were you doing? I'll bet you might remember some of these songs listed below. I still have many of my vinyl 45's, albums and cassettes from the early 80's that include many of these favorites.
1) "Owner of a Lonely Heart" - Yes.
I knew the moment I heard this song on the radio, that there was something uniquely special about the music from this album. I told all of my friends that this album would be huge - and it was and still is.
2) "Photograph" - Def Leppard.
When Pyromania came out, I made sure to get a copy of the vinyl album. What a classic rock monster!
3) "Every breath you take" - The Police.
I remember when this album came out. I was already out of high school. Many of my younger friends were in their senior year in 1983. They were into what was known back then as "college underground" music. The Police were not considered the icon they are today. Synchronicity was a giant album with lots of hits. I still have my vinyl copy.
4) "One thing leads to another" - The Fixx.
I think my good friend Mike (RIP) gave me a copy cassette of this album. That tape got played a lot in my car.
5) "Separate Ways" - Journey.
Yup, I have this vinyl too. Another huge album.
6) "Talking in your sleep" - Romantics.
Gees, every band I knew back then, played this song in their set list.
7) "Middle of the road" - The Pretenders.
What a great song! Always loved Chrissie Hynde's voice. "C'mon now, in the middle of the road, yeah! B-dddd, Meow!"
8) "Stand back" - Stevie Nicks.
This was Stevie's second album after "Bella Donna" in 1981. Lot's of great songs on this album. I think Phil Collins might have been inspired by the drum intro to this song, to write "Sussudio" a few years later. Almost the exact same intro. Betchya never thought about that before.
9) "The Heart of Rock and Roll" - Huey Lewis and The News.
I think every song on this album was a hit except for one. This absolutely reminds me of that summer. Huey Lewis was huge two years before "Back to the Future" even hit the movie theaters.
10) "Cuts like a knife" - Bryan Adams.
Another great "Drivin' in your car" song. Turn it up!
11) "Rainbow in the dark" - Dio
Having grown up in the dysfunctional hypocrisies of a Catholic household, I was somewhat pensive about buying this album - simply because of the album cover. If you know this album, you'll know what I mean. So, I bought it anyway. I was going through my rebellious stage and heavily into early 80's metal.
12) "The Reflex" - Duran Duran.
I didn't actually own any Duran Duran albums, but I did buy this vinyl 45, which I still own. I wasn't completely immune to 80's pop. Some of it was pretty good.
