Midnight at the Oasis - Maria Muldaur (1973)
One of the great classic 1970’s Pop-Jazz hits. I’ve always loved this song, since I was a kid - mostly because of the jazz guitar and all of the really cool chords - not to mention the amazing guitar solo by Amos Garrett.
When I teach a song like this to my students, I tell them that the goal is to remember how to play the structure of a song in sections. This song has four sections: A-B-C and D - (An Intro, verses, chorus’s and an outro), as marked in the tablature below.
When you can memorize each of the different structures of a song and remember the order in which they are played - and practice the song until you know it well, you can begin to learn how to eventually play the song without the aid of sheet music or chord charts.
Notice there is a 6/4 measure towards the end of the song (measure 25), then it goes right back to 4/4 time. Repeat the last four measures two times and fade out.
The structure for this song is as follows:
A - Intro
B - Verse (1)
B - Verse (1)
C - Chorus (1)
B - Verse (2)
B - Verse (Guitar solo)
C - Chorus (2) (Guitar solo continued)
B - Verse (3)
B - Verse (3)
C - Chorus (3)
D - Outro (Repeats two times - Fade out)
