"Playing it cool" was released in 1997. I was 34 years old that year. In January, my then friend, band mate and roommate, Frank and I moved into a two bedroom/two bath apartment about three miles west of the University of Central Florida. The evening that we were moving all of our stuff into our new apartment, I had my stereo tuned to a local mainstream jazz station called WLOQ. A song came on, just as I was walking through the living room, and I stopped in my tracks. I sat and listened to this amazing bass line being played on this new song I had never heard before. Frank stopped and we both listened to the song. I must admit, at first, I wasn't really paying attention to the guitar until about half way through the song.

The song ended and the DJ said something like, "That was Joyce Cooling with her song "Sleight of hand"..." I looked at Frank and said, "Wow, that was a chick?!" I remember his mouth dropping too. I went to Best Buy the very next day and searched in the CD section for …
