Sometimes when we play a chord progression, the melody can be a little more interesting than the chords themselves. It might sound like basic “cowboy chords” just aren’t enough. Same can be said with basic jazz or “barre” chords. Let’s take a look.

There are three different types of diminished chords:

  1. The Diminished Triad (I-iii-v)

  2. The Diminished Seventh (I-iii-v-bvii)

  3. The Half-Diminished Seventh (I-iii-v-vii), sometimes referred to as the “Minor 7b5”.

Each of the exercises below shows you how to insert any one of these three types of diminished chords between the C (I) and the Dm (ii) as a transition chord, to make the chord progression sound much more interesting.

  • Make sure you use your metronome. Suggested tempo 75-95bpm.
