This series of exercises will help you understand and remember chord shapes that work well together in a common progression. These exercises are designed to practice more like "songs" than exercises.
Key of F Major
(Advanced beginner lesson)
Set your metronome to 90 beats-per-minute. If this is too fast, lower the increments to a more comfortable tempo, but not too slow.
This first exercise is fairly basic, as it uses mostly triads and seventh chords. You will notice a strange looking chord called a "minor 7 flat 5" (also known as a “half-diminished chord) in the progression. This is a great sounding transition chord for the progression as it leads into the relative minor of the key.
This second exercise uses altered (jazz) versions of the previous chords to allow you to hear even more available, colorful notes in the chord progression. This will help extend the melody notes you choose to play over the progression.
