This is all still very new to me - as far as it’s scientific definitions and relationships to me as a musician. I hear color(s) in music. I have known this since I was a teenager. In my ignorance, I thought that everyone who played an instrument, could also hear the notes they play as color. Turns out, I was wrong in my assumptions. At the time, I also thought that every instrumentalist possessed variations on perfect pitch, relative pitch or associative pitch. I was wrong about that too. Well then, how did I develop it? I didn’t go to school to learn these things.
Several years ago, I heard about this anomaly called synesthesia. I then learned about it’s relation to hearing colors in something called chromesthesia. Is this what I have? Does it actually have a defined meaning or name?
I honestly don’t know how much of what I know about seeing color in music, is actually a “thing”, or if it’s just the way my brain works as a way to understand formulas, patterns and application in creating music.
I recently learned about Terrence Howard’s work as he is beginning to unravel the mysteries of “frequencies” in everything, including sound, light (color), etc. Here is his interview with Joe Rogan:
